Tile roofing is very common in Arizona. Tile roofing consists of decking, an underlayment, and tiles, usually made from clay or concrete. These components work together to create a weather-proof and insulated surface. If a tile roof is correctly installed by a skilled craftsman, it can last for decades, only needing an occasional underlayment replacement, or a couple new tiles.
Extreme durability: Tile roofing can often last decades. Tile roofs are resistant to fire, rot, insects, wind, and rain. The tiles on your roof will often last for many decades, meaning you will usually only need to replace the underlayment.
Energy efficient: Unlike asphalt, tiles absorb little heat, and tile roofs are nearly always constructed with ventilation and airflow that prevent trapped heat in the attic.
Classic beauty: Tile, especially clay tiles have a timeless, classic look. There’s a great variety of style and color options available, and tile is never going out of style.
Up-front cost: Tile roofs are provide great savings in the long-run due to their exceptional durability, but the up-front cost can be prohibitive for some families. The tiles themselves are more expensive than shingles or flat roofing material, and the process of installation is often more complex and difficult.
Weight: Not all roofs are designed to handle the weight of a tile roof. ALWAYS consult with a professional roofer to be certain your home can bear the load of a tile roof.
#1 Inspect in May: Set a reminder to have a professional get up on your roof and take a look to make certain there are no broken tiles or debris build up on your tile roof.
#2 Don’t walk on your tile roof: It’s easy to fall off a pitched tile roof, or break tiles by stepping on them. If you need to clear debris or get the roof inspected, it’s always a good idea to hire a professional if it’s a tile roof.
Mary Hoffmann George was out to coat our flat roof. He was prompt and professional and the coating has held up as expected. He even came out quickly and fixed a leak (not coming from the roof). Will definitely use again! JP Harrison There is a reason why GM Contracting have so many 5 star reviews. It is because George and his Team are customer focused and do exceptional work. They were punctual and timely (done is 1.5 days), polite, professional and just very nice. My new roof covering looks great and adds tremendous value to my flat roofed home that I was unable to get anyone else to put a roof on. His foam product was the perfect solution. Jeannette DE STILO Phenomenal Job. George and the crew had quite a job on their hands! I waited 36 years to replace my roof. 90% percent of roof's deck boards needed replacement! As I own a Palm Harbor manufactured home that was built quite well an endless amount of roof staples needed pulling etc. The crew was courteous and did a fabulous job (and a great cleanup)! The price was quite reasonable and the roof looks as new. They arrived as promised every day on time. The job was done July of 2022. It weathered this summer 2023 quite well. Totally recommend them. Paul DeStilo Michael Muse Very pleasant to work with. Greg did any excellent job spreading the silicone coating. He even repaired a hole where the old swamp cooler had been. I had no idea that hole was there. When I needed some drywall installed, I texted and they came out the next day to give me an estimate. Great job on the drywall. Diferent types of tile are good for diferent purposes, but we recommend clay, because it’s long lasting, durable, and it looks good!
Clay, and metal are the most durable materials, and tend to last the longest. These roofs can last 50 years or more if well cared for. The underlayment will likely need to be replaced before then, but you can still keep the tiles when getting it replaced.
Asphalt tiles are the least expensive, but that comes with a couple drawbacks, namely, a short life-span and bad insulation.
We recommend clearing your tile roof of debris every 2-3 years to make sure that a buildup doesn’t cause pooling water. Due to the danger of walking on a sloped roof without guardrails, we recommend hiring a professional!
