Shingles are a very common type of roofing in Arizona, especially asphalt. It consists of decking, an underlayment, and flexible, lightweight shingles. The shingles are most commonly made of asphalt, and are easily replaceable. These components work together to create a weather-proof and insulated surface. If a shingle roof installed by a skilled professional roofer, it can last for 15-20 years or more, only needed occasional shingles replaced.
Affordability: Shingle roofs are usually the most affordable type of roof there is. They are made of inexpensive asphalt, and are easy to store, transport, and install.
Flexibility: The most common type of shingles, asphalt, are flexible and resistant to cracking.
Light weight: Shingles are lightweight and can be installed on nearly any roof, whereas a heavier material like clay/concrete tiles may be a heavier load than some homes are designed to handle.
Lifespan: Shingle roofs are great for saving money, but with that comes the expected downside of a shorter lifespan. Shingle roofs will typically last 15-20 years, and only need minor repairs in the meantime, but after that they will likely be degraded and need replacement. If you leave degraded shingles on a roof, they lose their flexibility and crack, or lose their water resistant properties.
Heat: Thin shingles made from asphalt are typically not able to keep heat out as well as other types of roofs. Be certain that your attic is well ventilated, or the excessive heat may leak into your home, causing a higher electrical bill and wear on your AC unit during the hot summer months.
#1 Inspect in May: Set a reminder to have a professional get up on your roof and take a look to make certain no shingles are loose, or degraded to the point of not being usable anymore. It’s best to get this done in May before the monsoon season comes.
#2 Keep it clean: Remove debris from your roof, or have a professional clean it, and trim tree branches that hang over your roof and may damage it.
Mary HoffmannGeorge was out to coat our flat roof. He was prompt and professional and the coating has held up as expected. He even came out quickly and fixed a leak (not coming from the roof). Will definitely use again!JP HarrisonThere is a reason why GM Contracting have so many 5 star reviews. It is because George and his Team are customer focused and do exceptional work. They were punctual and timely (done is 1.5 days), polite, professional and just very nice. My new roof covering looks great and adds tremendous value to my flat roofed home that I was unable to get anyone else to put a roof on. His foam product was the perfect solution.Jeannette DE STILOPhenomenal Job. George and the crew had quite a job on their hands! I waited 36 years to replace my roof. 90% percent of roof's deck boards needed replacement! As I own a Palm Harbor manufactured home that was built quite well an endless amount of roof staples needed pulling etc. The crew was courteous and did a fabulous job (and a great cleanup)! The price was quite reasonable and the roof looks as new. They arrived as promised every day on time. The job was done July of 2022. It weathered this summer 2023 quite well. Totally recommend them. Paul DeStiloMichael MuseVery pleasant to work with. Greg did any excellent job spreading the silicone coating. He even repaired a hole where the old swamp cooler had been. The cost of repairs typically range from $200 to $600, but extensive damage can cost more. If you have extensive damage it may be more efficient to just replace the roof altogether. The cost of replacement depends on your square footage, the type of shingles used, and the condition of the underlayment and supports. Give us a call and we can get you a free quote!
A well-maintained shingle roof in Arizona should last between 12 and 15 years.
We generally recommend asphalt, the most common type of shingle used today.
Minor repairs should be able to be completed in a day, and usually only an hour or two. If you need to replace your shingle roof, most standard size homes will take approximately a week to install a new roof.
It can be difficult to determine whether you’re covered or not by your homeowners insurance. You have to consider the cause of damage, your plan’s coverage, and more. When we work on your roof, we will work with your insurance company to make sure the claim gets filed correctly.
