Shingles are a very common type of roofing in Arizona, especially asphalt.  It consists of decking, an underlayment, and flexible, lightweight shingles.  The shingles are most commonly made of asphalt, and are easily replaceable.  These components work together to create a weather-proof and insulated surface.   If a shingle roof installed by a skilled professional roofer, it can last for 15-20 years or more, only needed occasional shingles replaced.

Types of Shingle Roofing

Asphalt shingles are a great, affordable option for a roofing material. They are one of the most affordable roofing materials, easily replaceable and very lightweight. Many homes feature these shingles. They also come in a variety of colors and styles. The downside of asphalt shingles is that they do not usually last as long as other roof materials. The expected lifespan of shingles is about 15-20 years.

Wood shakes have numerous advantages as a roofing material. First off, they bring a natural beauty that adds charm and character to any home. They also offer insulation, helping to regulate temperature and energy efficiency indoors. When it comes to durability, high-quality wood shakes, like cedar, can withstand harsh weather conditions, such as wind, hail, and heavy snow. Moreover, wood shakes are naturally resistant to pests, insects, and decay, thanks to the oils and resins found in woods like cedar. While wood shakes do have some downsides like higher maintenance and potential fire hazards, their timeless appeal and unique aesthetic make them a popular choice for homeowners in certain regions and architectural styles.

The Benefits of Shingle Roofing

Affordability: Shingle roofs are usually the most affordable type of roof there is.  They are made of inexpensive asphalt, and are easy to store, transport, and install.

Flexibility:  The most common type of shingles, asphalt, are flexible and resistant to cracking.

Light weight: Shingles are lightweight and can be installed on nearly any roof, whereas a heavier material like clay/concrete tiles may be a heavier load than some homes are designed to handle.

The Challenges of A Shingle Roof

Lifespan:  Shingle roofs are great for saving money, but with that comes the expected downside of a shorter lifespan.  Shingle roofs will typically last 15-20 years, and only need minor repairs in the meantime, but after that they will likely be degraded and need replacement.  If you leave degraded shingles on a roof, they lose their flexibility and crack, or lose their water resistant properties.

Heat:  Thin shingles made from asphalt are typically not able to keep heat out as well as other types of roofs.  Be certain that your attic is well ventilated, or the excessive heat may leak into your home, causing a higher electrical bill and wear on your AC unit during the hot summer months.

How to help your shingle roof last longer

#1 Inspect in May:  Set a reminder to have a professional get up on your roof and take a look to make certain no shingles are loose, or degraded to the point of not being usable anymore.  It’s best to get this done in May before the monsoon season comes.

#2 Keep it clean: Remove debris from your roof, or have a professional clean it, and trim tree branches that hang over your roof and may damage it.

Common Questions About Scottsdale Shingle Roofing

The cost of repairs typically range from $200 to $600, but extensive damage can cost more.  If you have extensive damage it may be more efficient to just replace the roof altogether.  The cost of replacement depends on your square footage, the type of shingles used, and the condition of the underlayment and supports.  Give us a call and we can get you a free quote!

A well-maintained shingle roof in Arizona should last between 12 and 15 years.

We generally recommend asphalt, the most common type of shingle used today.

Minor repairs should be able to be completed in a day, and usually only an hour or two.  If you need to replace your shingle roof, most standard size homes will take approximately a week to install a new roof.

It can be difficult to determine whether you’re covered or not by your homeowners insurance.  You have to consider the cause of damage, your plan’s coverage, and more.  When we work on your roof, we will work with your insurance company to make sure the claim gets filed correctly.
